{"id":732,"date":"2026-06-29T22:00:26","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T20:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oracleblog.mediweb.link\/conseils\/tooth-extraction-pre-and-post-operative-recommendations\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T14:56:45","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T12:56:45","slug":"tooth-extraction-recommendations","status":"publish","type":"conseil","link":"https:\/\/oracleblog.mediweb.link\/en\/advice\/tooth-extraction-recommendations\/","title":{"rendered":"Tooth extraction: pre- and post-operative recommendations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before the procedure<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It is important <strong>not to take aspirin<\/strong> (acetylsalicylic acid) during the week before the extraction and the week that follows.<\/li><li>Avoid smoking from the day before, if possible.<\/li><li>Eat before you come: you should <strong>not<\/strong> arrive on an empty stomach.<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">During the procedure<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The length of the procedure depends on the number of teeth to be removed; we can give you an estimate so that you can plan your schedule accordingly.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>It is painless: you mainly feel pressure and vibration, and you may sometimes hear unusual noises or cracking sounds. This is perfectly normal.<\/p><\/blockquote><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the hours that follow<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be careful not to bite yourself until the anaesthetic has worn off.<\/li><li>Apply ice as soon as possible (place a cloth between the ice and your skin), 20 minutes every hour for 2 days.<\/li><li>No smoking while the wound is healing.<\/li><li>Rest as much as possible; no intense physical activity for 24 hours.<\/li><li>Avoid talking too much and keep your teeth together; avoid any sucking or suction movements on the wound(s).<\/li><li>Follow your prescription carefully and sleep with your head raised (one extra pillow behind your head).<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the days that follow<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oral hygiene<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good oral hygiene is the <strong>key to fast, high-quality healing<\/strong>.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For the first 3 days: gently apply the <strong>Hyalugel<\/strong> healing spray to the treated area(s), and continue your usual brushing <strong>without toothpaste<\/strong> in the areas that are not painful.<\/li><li>After 3 days: start using toothpaste again and brushing the treated area(s) by hand.<\/li><li>Mouthwash should be started 48 hours after the procedure; let it work without swishing it around.<\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diet<\/h3><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Preferably cold or lukewarm food for 48 hours, to prevent bleeding.<\/li><li>There is no absolute restriction: the stitches are there to protect the wound(s).<\/li><li>Eat what you can, preferably soft or semi-liquid food.<\/li><li>Ideally food that is easy to chew, without grains or seeds.<\/li><li>Avoid spicy, very salty or vinegary foods.<\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Normal after-effects<\/h3><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Difficulty opening your mouth for a few weeks: this will gradually ease.<\/li><li>Swelling and bruising are possible: this is a normal inflammatory reaction.<\/li><li>Sensitivity to cold may occur: this is temporary.<\/li><li>Tender gums: continue with the mouthwash and the healing gel if needed.<\/li><li>Slight spontaneous bleeding may occur: if necessary, apply pressure with a gauze pad for 1 hour.<\/li><li>An unpleasant taste in the mouth.<\/li><li>Bleeding when brushing around the stitches: this is normal, brush gently. The stitches are dissolvable and may fall out on their own.<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you are concerned<\/h2><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>If you experience unbearable pain, prolonged bleeding or any signs that worry you, do not hesitate to contact your dental surgeon. If the practice is closed, contact an on-call doctor or an on-call dental surgeon (you can obtain the list by calling the departmental dental council on Sundays and public holidays).<\/p><\/blockquote><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swelling or bruising can occur, although this is not common.
