Stains on the teeth — known as discolouration — are common and can spoil the look of a smile. ICON is a modern, minimally invasive and painless treatment that masks them while preserving as much of the tooth structure as possible.

Where do these stains come from?

Several causes can explain the appearance of stains on the teeth:

  • Fluorosis stains, caused by too much fluoride while the teeth were forming.
  • Traumatic hypoplasia of the enamel, following a knock.
  • Early decay lesions.
  • Deep stains on the incisors and molars (MIH).

What is ICON?

ICON is a resin-infiltration protocol that masks surface stains by filling the pores and defects in the enamel. It is a conservative treatment: the tooth is touched as little as possible and its structure is preserved.

Minimally invasive, painless and with no side effects: the results are visible immediately, with an 85% success rate at 3 years.

Where the lesion is deep, some sensitivity may appear for a few days after the treatment.

General recommendations

  • Avoid smoking during the treatment and for 10 days afterwards.
  • Avoid staining or acidic food and drink during the treatment and for 10 days afterwards: fruit juice, fizzy drinks, spices, wine, etc.
